“Self-identity is inextricably bound up with the identity of the surroundings.”
- Lars Svendsen, A Philosophy of Boredom
The most valuable things in life are the things we learn through personal experiences. Cliché, but clichés become clichés because so many people believe in them. We are who we are because of the people we come into contact with, the events we witness, and the actions we choose to take. We are constantly interacting with things outside of ourselves. When people say someone has changed, why is that always viewed as a bad thing? For the most part, change is good. We evolve and become stronger as a result of change. We will never know everything there is to know about ourselves because we're constantly discovering new wonders, ideas, and people that change how we see and understand both the world and ourselves.
This section provides a more intimate glimpse into my life, moments that have strengthened me and have helped me understand my identity a little better. I chose to share these specific stories because "The Desperate, The Swollen, & The Ugly" deals with self-image issues; "Xi Mi Lu" explores family dynamics; "Bzzzzz" discusses fear; and "I'll Do Re Mi (Do Right By You)" considers friendship, patience, forgiveness, and inner peace, all topics many people can relate to. These narratives relate the kinds of struggles that past Sophia overcame and present Sophia is still dealing with. You may never fully understand who Sophia Peng (and will I?), but here's a start.
