When you wake up in the morning, what's the first thing you think about? World hunger? Racial prejudice? Poverty? Environmental injustice? Probably not.
It's easy to become so involved in your own bubble that you forget about the larger issues that plague the world. I admit that at this stage in my life, most of my time is spent on my education and social life. Not that pursuing your own desires and dreams is a terrible thing, but it's important to be aware of what's going on around you. As we grow older, we realize our actions can impact others and likewise, those of others can influence us. Each of us are passionate about something in life and I believe it's important that we use that passion to move the world forward and to achieve equality. Though that is a large and daunting task, we can create change through small efforts by individuals. I try to expand my role in the community by educating myself on social, economic, political, and health problems through resources available to me as a student and by taking action through discussion and extracurricular activities. Thanks to the classes I took and teachers I had in high school and college, I have discovered a number of topics that interest me and have inspired me to act.
I have written a number of essays on racism against African-Americans and Asian-Americans, shedding light on the social, political, and economic problems created by racial prejudice. Regardless of whether or not you have experienced racism personally, I believe it is an important subject to be knowledgeable about because many other problems prevalent in society stem from racism, such as limited access to healthcare and education, unemployment, and crime.
Health is another a topic I have considered in depth. Understanding current health issues is critical to quality of life and survival, and through my essays on the safety of vaccines and GMOs and on healthy lifestyle choices, I aim to educate and generate discussion on how we can make informed decisions that affect our bodies and environment.
